Forest Service Research and Development
US Forest Service (September-October 2016)
In the US Forest Service's most recent Research and Development newsletter, researchers identified practices that could improve habitat for at-risk bats: retain snags for roosting, remove trees when bats are dormant and not using them, install artificial roosts, retain some mature trees during harvests, reduce harvest and burns during rearing season, protect caves and mines from disruption, create diverse landscapes.

Also, the Forest Products Laboratory (which SAF will visit during its upcoming convention in Madison, WI) partnered with the National Wooden Pallet and Container Association to use urban wood or trees from forest restoration projects for producing wooden pallets, which are used to help hold varied types of industrial and consumer goods for storage and shipping. This partnership will help ensure that wood from U.S. forests is put to the best possible use because over 2 billions pallets are used daily in the U.S.
