The scientific and technical sessions were developed around the following tracks:

Economics of Forest Management
Avoid being trapped by what you have been doing. Biorefining has the potential to help sustainably meet the world's energy needs. Recreation and tourism on private and public land provide major inputs to local economies. Presentations will address innovative management and operational techniques, marketing, and ecological, economical and social acceptability.

Forest Health and Fire
Forest health focuses on ecosystem functioning and resilience, therefore, understanding the roles of fire and invasive species is vital for forest health. Prevention, early detection, rapid response, containment, and control of fire and invasive species involve a wide range of factors. Presentations will address challenges and present new approaches, ideas, and practical information.

Global Connectedness
There are compelling ecological, energy efficiency, policy and moral reasons to improve the understanding of the global connectedness of responsible forestry. The practice of forestry has been a mechanism by which homes are built, societies grow and economies are strengthened. Track topics include trade, investment, consumption, policy and public engagement.

Human Dimensions of Forest Management
"The Trees are the Answer Campaign." Culture, the dynamic relationship between society and environment, provides a key to understanding and addressing environmental conflicts. This track explores the integration of human beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors into natural resource management planning, decision making, and actions; and using social marketing to promote forests and forest management for society's wellbeing.

Land Use Conversion
Forestland ownership is changing at a rapid pace that could lead to new issues and challenges for land managers. Topics include TIMOs and REITs, land conversion, family forestlands, conserved forests, future trends, urban growth and expanding urban interface, effects on wildlife, landscape diversity, hydrology and forest products.

Students and Young Professionals
Get the most out of today so you can be the best tomorrow. Topics include preparing cover letters, resumes, earning professional credentials, communication skills for future professionals, getting better results, being a more effective leader. Case studies will focus on personal and employer experiences, what employers are looking for, student chapter success stories and experiences.

Pinyon-Juniper
This track focuses on the sustained management of pinyon-juniper woodlands including their ecology, historical reference conditions, the role of fire for influencing long-term pinyon-juniper woodland dynamics, insects and diseases, and silvicultural systems to meet the multiresource objectives, regeneration, thinning, and silvopastoral prescriptions, and the develop of an ecosystem restoration strategy.

Restoration and Resilience
Restoration focuses on recapturing ecological integrity of forest ecosystems including the native herbaceous understory, native wildlife, nutrient cycling, hydrology, and natural role of fire. To be a lasting part of the landscape, restoration activities must sustain human communities and must be resilient and adaptive in the face of climate change.

Scale of Applied Forestry
NIPF forests are under pressure to provide timber and non-timber forest products while furnishing a variety of ecosystem services such as clean water, carbon sequestration and biodiversity. As new markets emerge for products from small-scale forestry systems, innovative management strategies and policies are crucial to assure the sustainability of forest resources.

Science Application
Foresters often rely on personal experience, anecdotal evidence, and an array of models and corporate datasets when making management and policy decisions. Fact and scientific evidence supported decisions are rarer than we might like to think. By overlooking key statistical precepts, model results may be questionable. Enhance your credibility, build on ongoing knowledge and reduce your reliance on pure guesses.

Urban Greening
Urban and community forestry faces the unique challenges and opportunities of the green industry including green jobs, green infrastructure, urban biodiversity, tree risk assessment, inventory, and maintenance, storm damage response and restoration, laws and ordinances, urban planning, urban revitalization, community partnerships, new technologies and urban forestry plan development.

Sponsored Technology Sessions
Organizations and companies who want to present information of a commercial or proprietary nature on products, services and research can register for a session and be part of a Sponsored Technology Track. Presentations will be listed within the concurrent session program and have an assigned room and scheduled time.

3rd Symposium on American Forest Policy
A forum for presenting and discussing US forest policy issues covering a range of U.S. forest policy topics such as federal and state forest policy, private lands policy, forest policy implementation and effectiveness, and emerging trends in forest policy such as biomass, carbon climate change, and water quality and quantity.

Poster Symposium
Posters are grouped by listed subject areas. The Poster Symposia are facilitated sessions with oral presentations by poster authors followed by group discussion in the poster area. Graduate and undergraduate students are eligible for the FS&TB Student Poster Awards. The winning posters' abstracts are printed in the Journal of Forestry.
