Celebrating 125 Years

Our Forests, Our Future — A Brief History

Founded on November 30, 1900, by Gifford Pinchot, the Society of American Foresters (SAF) was established to advance the science, education, technology, and practice of forestry. SAF's legacy has played a central role in shaping forestry policy, education, and sustainable forest management in the United States.

SAF advances the future of sustainable forestry and natural resources management by educating, connecting, and empowering the professionals who steward our landscapes for generations to come. This has been our driving force for 125 years—and will continue to be for the next 125.

From 2025 through 2026, SAF will highlight and champion the work that has been—and continues to be—instrumental in advancing and growing forestry. Join us in celebrating our forests through stories, special occasions, meaningful partnerships, and new opportunities.
