McNulty Starts Term as SAF President

Bethesda, MD — On January 1, 2019, John W. McNulty, CF, of Orrington, Maine, began his one-year term as President of the Society of American Foresters (SAF). Founded in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot and headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, SAF is a national organization that represents and serves 11,000 forestry professionals in the United States. McNulty will continue serving on SAF’s Board of Directors for the next two years, including as Chair in 2019. He previously served on SAF’s Board from 2001 to 2003 as the District 6 representative, which encompasses New England and New York. Since joining the professional Society in 1978, McNulty has held numerous state and regional offices for SAF, served on several national committees, and was elected an SAF Fellow in 2003.
McNulty is President and CEO of Seven Islands Land Company, a forest management company located in Bangor, Maine. Seven Islands manages 820,000 acres of timberland in Maine owned by the Pingree family. Acquired in 1841 by David Pingree of Salem, Massachusetts, the family is now entering its eighth generation of ownership. Seven Islands also manages timberland for non-Pingree clients through its subsidiary, Orion Timberlands, LLC. Additionally, Seven Islands owns and manages a 16 million board foot hardwood sawmill, a 350,000-ton hardwood chipping facility, both located in Portage, Maine, and a custom kiln drying facility located in Ashland, Maine.
A 1978 graduate of the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forest Management, McNulty began his career with Seven Islands in 1978 as a field forester. He has held numerous positions in the company throughout his 41-year career being named Vice-President in 1993, President of Orion Timberlands in 2004, and President of Seven Islands in 2008.
John resides in Orrington, Maine, has two grown sons that reside in Maine, and triplet grandchildren.
