SAF Supports State & Private Forestry

May 2, 2019

Continuing our focus on Fiscal Year 2020 appropriations, SAF assisted in outreach for this coalition letter advocating for funding for USDA Forest Service State and Private Forestry Cooperative Programs. The letter, led by the National Association of State Foresters and signed by 46 diverse organizations, was sent to the Chair and Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies. More organizations are expected to sign before the letter is sent to Senate Appropriations later this month. Next week, we'll share the coalition letter advocating specifically for programs that support urban and community forestry.

The USDA Forest Service State and Private Forestry Program area has a long history as an important part of the Forest Service and the profession of forestry. Private forests constitute most of the nation’s forests and over 90 percent of our domestically-produced forest products. Providing this important technical and financial assistance to private landowners and the resource managers responsible for managing more than 60 percent of America’s forests helps to increase the pace of work and on-the-ground results, improve the resilience of the nation’s forests, and protect communities and the environment from forest pests, invasive species, and wildland fires.
