SAF Announces Election Results

The Society of American Foresters (SAF) has released the results of its 2016 election to the board of directors.

SAF members elected David S. Lewis, CF, ACF, for 2017 vice president. He will serve SAF as the president in 2018. Lewis is vice president and principal at Southern Forestry Consultants in Monticello, Florida. He also worked for the US Forest Service and for Balfour Pulpwood Company, Inc., in Georgia. Lewis was the recipient of the Southeastern SAF Chair’s Award in 2015, served on the SAF Board from 2010-2012, and named SAF Fellow in 2008. A Certified Forester, he joined SAF in 1978.   

SAF members also elected four members to serve on the board of directors. They will serve three-year terms beginning January 1.

Michael J. Cloughesy was elected board member from District 2. He is director of forestry at the Oregon Forest Resources Institute in Portland, Oregon. He has been active in SAF since 1985. He taught at Oregon State University and worked on forestry issues with the Native American community.

Donald E. Howlett, CF, was elected as board member for District 5. He retired in 2010 from the US Forest Service, after serving in conservation education and forest planning. Howlett has served SAF in many volunteer capacities since 1987, and was named SAF Fellow in 2013.  

Christa F. Rogers was elected board member from District 8. Rogers is a natural resources manager with Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation in Huntersville, North Carolina, and has been involved in SAF since 2001. In addition to holding an MS in Forestry from the University of Tennessee, she is a North Carolina and interagency prescribed burner and a certified Florida wildland firefighter.   

Michael L. Murphrey, CF, was chosen as board member from District 11. He is with the Texas A&M Forest Service, where he specializes in southern pine beetle prevention and serves as invasive species coordinator. He was recognized with a Texas SAF Lawrence C. Walker Distinguished Service to Forestry Award in 2016. Murphrey has been involved in SAF since 2001.
