2021 Virtual Convention FAQ
As of November 30, 2021. Note: This page will be updated as more information is released about the 2021 SAF Virtual National Convention.
In what time zone are the times in the program listed?
U.S. Eastern time.
When was the virtual convention?
The 2021 SAF National Virtual Convention was held November 3-6, 2021. Recordings from all Convention events will be offered on the event site starting November 17, 2021.
What is a virtual convention?
A virtual convention involves most of the elements you would expect with an in-person event, including plenary and concurrent sessions, workshops, posters, receptions, exhibit hall, and a career fair. All of these are accessible through a website. You will see video of presentations along with presentation slides and be able to ask presenters questions during audience Q&A sessions. Likewise, you can visit and communicate with exhibitors via video and 1:1 chat. Some events will be live, and others will involve recorded content with real-time presenter chat and Q&A. Unlike an in-person event, all sessions will be recorded and accessible to you after the convention into 2022.
What is SAF2021: On Demand?
Now that the live event is over, SAF2021: On Demand is a way to access all of the content from the live event afterwards. If you did not register for the live event, but would now like to access the content, please consider registering for this on-demand experience. All content including innovation zones, networking roundtables, technical sessions, plenaries, Friday Focus On sessions, Student Meet Up, professional development seminars, and People, Policy, and Popcorn sessions will be available to view through January 16, 2022.
Can I interact with exhibitors on the site after the event?
All exhibitors are listed in the Exhibit Hall alphabetically. All exhibit booths will remain active on the site for registrants through December 31, and you are able to access all of their resources, such as product information brochures, photos, and videos. You can also contact the exhibitors listed in the booth to learn more about their products.
Are posters still viewable?
Posters can be accessed under the "Program" menu item and searched by author, track, or title. They will be available to view on the site for registrants through January 16, 2022.
Were there any tours offered?
After careful evaluation regarding safety and feasibility, SAF decided to not offer in-person or virtual tours this year.
What is Tree'via Bowl?
Tree'via Bowl is a virtual, reimagined version of Quiz Bowl where students of forestry schools from from across the country are invited to battle head-to-head over forestry and natural resources questions in a pub trivia format. For the first time, alumni were welcome to play alongside students in teams or solo during the event. This year's Tree'via Bowl winners were the students of UC Berkeley. The competition can be viewed on the event website by registrants.
What is the deadline to register for SAF2021: On Demand?
Registration for the on-demand event opens November 23, 2021 and closes January 16, 2022.
Can I register for just one day?
Single day registration is not available. SAF reduced registration pricing by 40% from the in-person rates, which means that registration for the entire convention is approximately the same price as an in-person day pass.
Can I register and share my login with someone else?
Only convention registrants can login to the virtual convention and be recognized for continuing education credit. Sharing a login or attempting to rebroadcast convention content to someone else is prohibited. Our virtual convention partner has tools in place to identify any violations and terminate the registered user’s registration without refund and forfeiture of all continuing education credits earned.
Can I download a presentation to share with others?
Recordings cannot be downloaded and should not be shared with others who did not register for the event.
I want to register a group of people at one time, how can I do that?
We recommend that you register under the group rate (up to 10 organization/agency members) or classroom rate for students (up to 25 students). Send an email to [email protected]
with an attached Excel spreadsheet
with the first and last name of each person, along with full contact information. If the user’s member ID is known, please include that for each as well. Please also indicate how you would like to pay. SAF staff will verify membership status and contact you.
Accessing the Event
How will I know where to go to join the virtual convention?
Visit safconvention.evareg.com to access the SAF2021 virtual event site. SAF staff will also email you after you register with the location of the virtual convention website and details on how to login.
How do I log in to the SAF2021 site?
When you log in to the SAF virtual event platform, the login button will take you to a login portal on the SAF website. Your username and password will be the same as what you use to access the SAF member portal and what was used to register for the event. If you forgot your username or password, click those links below the “Sign In” button to be redirected in creating new ones.
What do I do if I forgot my login information?
Visit www.safnet.org/signin and use the links below the login field to retrieve your username and/or reset your password. Your login to the virtual convention is the same as what you use to login to the SAF website. If the convention has started, you can go to the virtual convention website and click on Login. You will find links to retrieve your username and reset your password. If you have trouble logging in, contact SAF's member services team for assistance at [email protected] or at (866) 897-8720.
What if I thought I registered, but I can’t gain access?
Contact SAF's member services team with any registration or login issues you may be having at [email protected] or at (866) 897-8720. SAF staff will be happy to assist you.
What do I do if I have issues within the virtual event site or need site assistance during the event?
If you have technical issues once you are on the site, such as the presentation won’t launch properly, contact [email protected]
What browser is required to participate?
It is recommended by EVA, that Google Chrome be used to access the site. Safari, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge may also be used but may not work as well as Chrome. Please note that Internet Explorer is incompatible with our virtual convention.
What kind of internet connection do I need to participate?
You will need a DSL or broadband connection, via cable or satellite, or better to participate. Dial-up connections will not have sufficient bandwidth to stream our multimedia presentations. A quick test is to see if you can stream a YouTube video without the video pausing to re-buffer. If it pauses/re-buffers, try another video. If you can stream video without interruption, your connection is sufficient for the convention. If not, we encourage you to find an alternate connection.
Help! I can't get past the "Edit Your Profile" page on the event site.
When you first log in to the site, you will be prompted to edit your profile page. Once you make a few edits, including updating your CFE and contact preferences, click save. Once your changes are saved you should be able to enter the site freely.
What type of device do I need to use to participate?
The SAF Convention can be accessed from a desktop computer, laptop, or mobile device. With our heavy usage of video and presentation slides, the best experience will come from using either a desktop or laptop computer, or a mobile device using a larger external display. If you will be engaging in workshops or live events, ensure that your device is equipped with a camera and microphone and that your privacy settings will allow them to work with your preferred internet browser.
What kind of computer settings and set up do I need to participate?
You will need a computer with Windows, iOS, or Linux based operating system or a mobile device with an Android or iOS operating system, a stable internet connection (either wired or wi-fi), and an internet browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Edge or Safari. If you plan to participate in any workshops, networking receptions, or the career fair, we encourage you to use a device equipped with a camera and a microphone. These are not required for accessing plenary and technical sessions, interacting with exhibitors, or viewing posters. For any interactive sessions where you will use your microphone or camera, you will want to check the privacy settings on your device to ensure it allows applications to access them.
Will there be a tutorial on how the virtual convention works prior to the convention?
View the SAF2021 site tutorial via this link to learn about how to use and access the site and get the most out of your Convention experience. We also suggest you view this Know Before You Go packet prior to attending Convention.
What will happen if I have technical difficulties with the virtual convention?
No matter where you are in the convention a help button will be at the bottom of the page. Please click it and help will be on the way.
What presentation platforms will be used for On Demand content?
All of the SAF convention content will be delivered on the site through the use of vimeo. You will not need to leave the site to access video content.
Is there a risk of the virtual convention site crashing? What happens if the convention site crashes?
SAF’s virtual convention platform has sufficient bandwidth to avoid any crashes based on volume and employs industry leading practices (like Google and Amazon) to safeguard against any technological disruption, as well as redundancies to restore functionality quickly. In the unlikely event of disruption, processes are in place to restore functionality. Widespread power outages (brown-outs/black-outs), the severing of telecom cables, and acts of God cannot be ruled out as minimal but potential risks.
What happens if the presentation I am watching crashes?
Event Virtual Assistant (EVA), SAF’s virtual convention service provider, has dedicated technical support personnel to assist with any virtual convention issues. Guidance on seeking support will be available on the convention website and in information provided to you prior to the start of the convention.
What happens if I have issue accessing site content once I'm logged in?
EVA suggests that you clear your cache and browser data in Google Chrome if you have any issues accessing the site.
Are the presentations be live or recorded?
The post-event content is a mixture of live and recorded presentations. All presentations, where the presenters have agreed to SAF recording of them, are ultimately available on demand to registered attendees through January 16, 2022.
Is there a mobile app offered this year?
The event platform is mobile friendly so we will not have an app available this year and encourage all attendees to visit the convention site on their devices as needed.
How do I connect with the national staff?
SAF has a virtual booth available in the exhibit hall with contact information for membership personnel listed. You can also email [email protected]
to access staff.
I usually renew my membership at convention, how can I do that with the virtual convention?
To ensure you received the discounted member registration rate for the convention, we encourage you to renew your membership prior to registering by going to www.eforester.org/renewnow
and logging in. If your membership is in good standing and you want to renew during the convention, you can proceed to the SAF booth in the Exhibit Hall and follow the link to renew membership. If you need to make changes prior to renew or need additional assistance, you can contact staff using direct email links, the chat function, or call us.
Continuing Education Questions
How many CFEs can I earn?
You can earn up to 26 CFEs through January 16, 2022.
What do I need to do to earn my CFEs?
To earn continuing education credits you will watch a presentation or session in entirety and record the CFE code when it becomes available at the end of the presentation or session. Once you view the presentation(s) or session you choose, be sure to jot the code down so you can submit them in the On Demand CFE Form for the recorded presentations/sessions available HERE . CFEs will post to your SAF CFE record shortly following convention. Please allow up to 6 weeks for processing. No further form or submissions will be required on your part.
How will you gauge participation so no one can game the system to earn CFEs?
Presentations and sessions eligible for CFEs will require a code to earn CFEs. This code will be announced at the end of the presentation or session. Only a single code for a given session or presentation time may be submitted. Zoom participation logs will confirm any suspicion of simultaneous viewing of multiple sessions.
What sessions can I earn CFEs for?
CFEs can be earned for the majority of the sessions, aside from Posters and select Innovation Zones. There are also a few other sessions that are not eligible for CFEs including social sessions such as Opening Reception, Alumni Receptions, and Town Hall. Sessions available for you to earn CFEs will include a CFE code that will be announced immediately following the presentation or session. Codes will ONLY be announced and shared during the respective presentation and sessions that are CFE eligible.
Can I session hop to catch as many presentations and CFEs as possible?
We encourage you to customize your learning experience for #SAF2021. However, not all presentations are standalone eligible for continuing education credits. Some sessions are organized with more than three (3) presentations. Those sessions must be viewed in entirety to earn the credits. Seminars, interactive discussions, and panels must be viewed in entirety to earn the credits. We do welcome you to catch presentations you miss after the event to continue earning additional CFEs.
Will you issue certificates?
SAF will not be issuing certificates.
Will I be able to earn CFEs after the convention ends?
Unlike an in-person event, you will be able to continue earning CFEs after the convention ends. Convention sessions will remain available to you through January 16, 2022 and the process for earning credits will remain the same as during the live event.
When will my CFEs show in my CFE record?
CFEs will appear on your record shortly following the event if you submitted your daily CFE Form(s) no later than Saturday, November 6 at 11:59 pm Hawaiian Time for the live event viewings. Please allow up to 6 weeks for processing. On Demand CFE Forms must be received no later than January 16, 2022 at 11:59 pm ET.
Can my CFEs rollover to the next certification cycle?
CFEs may not rollover to the next certification cycle.
I’m recertifying this year, how can my CFEs be applied to the next certification cycle?
Up to 26 CFEs, cumulatively, earned during and after convention may count towards the current and/or next certification cycle depending on the dates the CFEs are earned and when you recertify.
Who do I contact if I have questions about continuing education credits?
For questions about SAF CFEs or ISA CEUs for SAF’s 2021 National Convention, please email [email protected].
Can I earn ISA CEUs?
ISA CEUs were only available during the live event, November 4-6.
