What SAF Membership Means To...

Forest Professionals

Foresters and natural resources management professionals are the principal drivers behind keeping forests as forests for the long term. They chose a career in this field because they want to contribute to the conservation of healthy working lands that will meet society’s needs today and in the future. These professionals are SAF members.

SAF offers a membership level to support you in every stage of your career in forestry or natural resources management. Dues paying members at the Premium, Full, Retired, and Transitional levels are all considered SAF "professional" members. These individuals represent the full spectrum of the forestry profession. Some are small business owners; others work on behalf of nonprofits, industry, federal/state/local governments, and universities; all enjoy a host of SAF benefits.

Premium Members (previously "Platinum" and "Gold" members) are graduates of an SAF-accredited program/curriculum OR scientists or practitioners who hold an associate’s or higher degree* in forestry, forest technology, or natural resources (dues $180).

Full Members (previously "Silver" and "Full" members) are graduates of an SAF-accredited program/curriculum OR scientists or practitioners who hold an associate’s or higher degree* in forestry, forest technology, or natural resources (dues $125).

Retired Members are former Full or Premium members who are 65 years of age or older and no longer working full time within forestry or natural resources (dues $85; those interested in becoming a retired member should reach out to [email protected]).

Transitional Members are within five years of graduating with an associate’s or higher degree* in forestry, forest technology, or natural resources. Transitional membership dues follow a five-step, annualized sliding scale based on the number of years the member is post-graduation (dues $35 to $75).

SAF Golden Members are individuals who have been dues-paying members of SAF for 50 or more years.

As a professional forester working in the field, I encountered issues that I could not solve with my local expertise. Being a member of SAF allowed me to connect with others with similar issues.  I have stayed a member because we are all part of the bigger picture, and it's for the good of all."

I joined SAF as a student and found three things that I was looking for: role models, mentors, and jobs. I also found a community to help me formulate my land ethic, a safe forum to ask questions, and a foundation for understanding my profession. I use SAF in the same ways today as I did when I was a student.”
