Thomas Hill Jr. Education and Opportunity Fund

The Thomas Hill Jr. Education and Opportunity Fund was made possible by a generous gift from the estate of Thomas Hill. The fund provides financial resources and opportunities to SAF’s youngest members, offering scholarships to SAF student members attending an undergraduate program in forestry or a related natural resources field.

Available Scholarships

Student Scholarships of $1,500 are available to any SAF student member enrolled in a 2- or 4-year undergraduate forestry or natural resource program. Scholarship applications are accepted until May 15.

  • Complete the application via the link below in the How to Submit Your Application section by May 15.
  • Supplementary documents must be submitted in the application form.
Eligibility
  • Applicant must be an SAF student member.
  • Applicant my be enrolled in a 2- or 4-year undergraduate forestry or natural resource program.
  • Applicants pursuing a two-year degree must be entering their second year.
  • Applicants pursuing a four-year degree may be entering their junior or senior year.
  • Applicants are eligible to receive one scholarship per year, for up to two years. Receiving a scholarship one year does not guarantee automatic receipt for a second year. Applicants must resubmit application to be considered for a second year. 
Selection Criteria

Student Scholarship applications will be evaluated against the following criteria:

  • Academic performance
  • Extracurricular activities, such as leadership positions held and volunteer involvement
  • Quality of applicant’s personal statement, including ability to express goals and actions toward a career in forestry or natural resources
  • Quality of applicant’s recommendation letter, including recommender’s endorsement of applicant’s potential for future success in forestry or natural resources
Use of Funding

Scholarship funds can be used for any expenses related to pursuing an undergraduate degree in forestry or natural resources (e.g. program costs, books and materials, room and board, etc.).

Decisions and Fund Dispersal

Students will be notified of scholarship decisions no later than July 1. Upon approval, the full scholarship award will be dispersed directly to the student.
