Teaching Youth and Communities About Forests: Project Learning Tree Course and Activities

Project Learning Tree (PLT) and The Society of American Foresters (SAF) are pleased to announce an online short course – Teaching Youth and Communities About Forests – to help you strengthen your outreach and education efforts to youth and adults. Register Now!

PLT is an award-winning environmental education program of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). Designed for educators, youth leaders, and natural resource professionals, PLT uses trees and forests as windows on the world to help communities and youth understand and value the benefits of forests.

Use PLT’s popular activities, such as Every Tree for itself, How Big is Your Tree, Forest to Faucet, 100 Acre Wood, and Global Invaders, to engage your audience in learning about trees and forests, forest product certification, tree lifecycles, benefits of renewable resources, invasive species, and more.

This self-paced online course is intended for foresters and natural resource professionals and provides access to some of PLT's most popular hands-on activities and training to effectively implement with your audience. No prior knowledge, education background or teaching experience is needed.

The course (approximately 4 hours) consists of 30-45 minute interactive learning experiences, with videos, simulations, and planning exercises that help you plan activities with youth and adult audiences in your own setting. The course also gives you online access to PLT’s best-selling Environmental Education Activity Guide complete with 96 activities, and three bonus activities.

Following the course, you will be able to:
Incorporate easy-to-do PLT activities into your outreach and education efforts.
Focus on learning outcomes important to you and your audience.
Adapt PLT activities for your audience and context to suit and engage participants.
Connect to resources such as relevant online tools, supplemental content, and PLT in your state.

This short course will be approved for 4.0 Category 2 Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) units. Upon successful completion of the course, CFEs will be automatically added to your CFE records.
