Executive Order on Strengthening the Nation’s Forests, Communities, and Local Economies

April 26, 2022

On Earth Day, President Biden signed the “Executive Order on Strengthening the Nation’s Forests, Communities, and Local Economies.” The Executive Order recognizes the critical role that our federal forestlands play in combating climate change and the importance of maintaining their resilience. Through funding from the Infrastructure Investments and Jobs Act, the Administration is taking steps to restore ecosystems, reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire, and undertake an inventory of existing old growth trees on federal lands.

“Our forests are a critical tool in combating climate change, but they are also vulnerable to its impacts,” SAF CEO Terry Baker commented. “As outlined in the Executive Order, ensuring the health of our forests through science-based restoration and management is essential to seeing that they can continue to play their role in storing carbon, supporting watershed function, and providing wildlife habitat.”

SAF is excited to see continued investment in our nation’s forests and we look forward to working with our partners to ensure the implementation of science-driven policies and practices across the landscape. We also remain committed to helping our members stay informed and engaged throughout this process.
