The Society of American Foresters is excited to welcome our 2023 Henry Clepper Forest Policy Intern, Mariah Choiniere! This summer, Mariah will assist the Policy and Public Affairs Team at SAF's national headquarters in Washington, D.C., to advance science-informed policies that support the sustainable management of our nation's forests.

Raised in rural Vermont on a small family-owned woodlot, Mariah's connection to the forestry profession is longstanding. From an early age, she assisted in actively managing her family's property, helping replenish annual firewood stores and produce small quantities of maple syrup. Although her upbringing fostered a strong relationship with the working landscape, it was participation in AmeriCorps service and long-distance hiking that ultimately inspired her to pursue forestry as a career.

Mariah graduated from the University of Vermont this May with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. As a student, she received national recognition as a Truman and Udall Scholar for her commitment to public service and environmental stewardship. These awards catalyzed Mariah's interest in exploring the policy side of the forestry profession.
