The collection of essays in this book provides ideas to help the Forest Service to adapt to changing conditions. As you read them, I encourage you to ask yourselves these questions: Can these ideas help the Forest Service to care for these lands and provide the expected level of public service while maintaining the public’s trust? And are these ideas forward-looking? It is essential that we understand and learn from the history of these lands, but solutions will require addressing not only the challenges we face today, but also those we know are coming—and those we haven’t foreseen.
